Pedestal Furniture
Pedestal Furniture is a collection defined by material honesty, with exposed structure and a minimalist visual language informed by brutalist principles. Designed as both functional furniture and display supports, the pieces avoid prescribing a single function, allowing use to emerge through interactions between objects and their users.
The collection is crafted from Japanese birch plywood sourced and manufactured in Hokkaido, treated with kakishibu (fermented persimmon tannin). Rather than hiding construction, the design makes visible joints, planes, and proportions as vital parts of the final structure, echoing vernacular forms shaped by everyday use.
Tokyo-based designer Luka Yasukawa began working on the collection in 2018. Approached as a case study, ANF revisited its production together with Yasukawa, moving away from imported timber and standard industrial finishes. The project was reoriented towards materials produced in Japan and processes aligned with local resources, manufacturing realities, and long-term availability.
Hokkaido-made birch plywood was selected for its structural reliability and sustainability, with a layered composition supporting both the physical use of the pieces and their presence as spatial elements within an interior.
The surfaces are treated with successive coats of kakishibu, a traditional Japanese tannin valued for its protective qualities. Beyond its colour, kakishibu enhances resistance to humidity, insects, and light while remaining breathable. As the material reacts to air and exposure, tones gradually deepen, allowing each piece to evolve in response to its environment and use.
Fully customisable in dimensions and finish, the Pedestal pieces are produced on demand. Through use and exposure to light, the surfaces will continue to evolve, developing a patina that reflects both material behaviour and individual context of use.
