Profile

ANF Work is a design studio and consultancy based in Paris, creating new narratives from the legacy of Japanese folk craft. Rooted in contextual design, the studio dives deep into archives, materials and processes, revealing their relevance in addressing today’s challenges.

This vision goes hand in hand with a more sustainable model: rather than favouring mass production, ANF partners directly with local Japanese makers and institutions to revitalise production areas, develop creative programmes, and build an ecosystem where artisans can make a better living from their work, where production is in tune with available resources, and where each piece tells a far-reaching human story that goes beyond the simple aesthetic function.

Led by French-Japanese duo Timothée Kaplan and Ayumi Yoshida, the studio values the human relationships that emerge through collaboration – building lasting ties across Japan, Europe and beyond.

What we do

Working both as a design studio for Japanese and international clients and as strategic consultants for regional revitalisation, ANF’s multifaceted approach bridges fieldwork, product development, curation, graphic design, and art direction. Our work combines strategic advice and hands-on implementation, leading to meaningful projects rooted in material, place, and story.

Product development
We reframe historical objects and craft stories into contemporary editions, grounding each collection in local knowledge and production areas. Every project starts from the material, whether urushi lacquer, washi paper, or porcelain, explored with respect to its origin and potential for contemporary design.

Creative intermediary
We help Japanese makers, studios, and public institutions refine their identity and international positioning through branding, storytelling, and export strategies. For international clients, we provide access to Japan’s unique craft ecosystem – through immersive field research, production management, and cultural translation.

Special projects
We work closely with artisans, institutions and designers, creating formats that connect communities, skills, and audiences. This includes organising residencies, workshops, and exhibitions unfolding both locally and internationally, as well as developing editorial content that documents and shares this vision.

Who we are

Timothée Kaplan

With a background in art history and editorial design, Timothée has spent over a decade developing projects between Japan and Europe. As co-founder of DEJIMA Store Paris, he initiated numerous collaborations between Japanese artisans and international artists and designers, producing collections that reposition craft within contemporary design and retail contexts. ANF extends this experience into a broader studio and consultancy practice.

Ayumi Yoshida

Originally trained in textile design and fashion, Ayumi brings hands-on experience of Japanese craftsmanship and production contexts. Her work bridges creative development and project coordination, ensuring that collaborations remain aligned with both cultural values and operational constraints. At ANF, she oversees field research, artisan relations, and project development across Japan.
